About This Spot

Stepping into The Old Butchers Cafe & Bistro at The Hare & Hounds Pub in Fishlake is like finding a quiet retreat woven into village life. The moment you arrive, there’s an inviting warmth—an easygoing rhythm that balances the comforting buzz of a well-loved local spot with the gentle, thoughtful care of a neighborhood gathering place. Here, time seems to slow just enough for you to settle in and savor a moment truly your own.

The café exudes a charm rooted in its setting: a small village that naturally draws walkers, cyclists, and families alike. The atmosphere is quietly lively, punctuated by friendly exchanges and the occasional clink of cups, all underscored by the kind of service that feels personal without being intrusive. It’s the kind of place where the staff know their regulars but greet newcomers with the same easy warmth.

Eating here feels like an invitation to experience thoughtful, well-crafted comfort food served with a local touch. Whether you’re fueling up with a hearty breakfast or pausing for a light bite, there’s a genuine creativity in the plates, blending familiar flavors with a hint of something more. From eggs served just right to scones that beckon with fresh warmth, the menu quietly supports the relaxed, unhurried pace of the day.

On busy weekend mornings, you’ll find a steady hum of visitors—sometimes post-cycle groups catching a breath, sometimes families sharing moments before wandering back outside. Even amid the movement, the space never loses its sense of calm, making it easy to appreciate the blend of the old and the new, the familiar and the unexpected.

For those looking to extend their visit beyond a coffee or brunch, the venue doubles as a cozy lounge and event space, where the same inviting spirit continues in more lively or celebratory moments. Whether stopping briefly or lingering longer, there’s a warmth here that feels like a gentle nod to the heart of community.

We visited Sunday morning and it was very busy. Lot of bicycle visitors stopped for a brunch. Breakfast was really delicious, staff very welcome and nice and cosy environment.

I went for breakfast. The food was pricier than other local breakfast places (£13.95 for their largest breakfast) but the ingredients definitely tasted like they were better quality, the sausage was well seasoned and not too greasy, the yoke of the eggs was rich. I took a friend who is on a diet and it was no problem for them to adapt the menu items to be diet friendly e.g. they poached his eggs instead of frying them.

Brilliant, tasty breakfasts. Staff and customers were all really friendly and helpful. Great value for money and best poached eggs ever.
